33: Zone of Reinforcement

Have you ever heard of zones of reinforcement?

Zones of reinforcement are used in training to help direct your pet’s focus. You can use them to provoke the behavior that you want from your pet in any situation.

Humans have zones of reinforcement too which I explain a little in this episode, but mostly, we’re focusing on how to use them with our pets.

This concept is used a lot in the sports dog world, but this episode will show you why it’s so helpful in any type of pet training. I’m sharing specific examples from training with my own pets to help you understand what I’m talking about and how to make it work for you and your pet.

What We Cover in Today’s Episode

  • What a zone of reinforcement is

  • The importance of clear communication in training

  • Positive and negative reinforcement

  • How to choose zones of reinforcement

  • Why you and your pets will have different zones of reinforcement

  • Making your body a zone of reinforcement for your dog

  • How specific places can help you in training

  • Creating zones that can go anywhere

  • How to get your pet to focus on you

Zones of reinforcement will vary from one pet to another so I hope this helps you get started with yours. If you’ve ever struggled to communicate with your pet, this is a great concept for you to learn.
